"The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched—they must be felt with the heart." – Helen Keller

Welcome

Welcome to my website. I am Lisa Dundas, independent celebrant, covering the Coventry and Warwickshire area and beyond. I am trained with Civil Ceremonies Ltd in delivering couples ceremonies, naming ceremonies and funerals.

So, what is a celebrant? As a celebrant, I can produce and perform a personalised ceremony, whether it be for a wedding or a funeral, with the appropriate wording, readings and poetry. There are no rigid guidelines to conform to, making each ceremony personal and completely individual.

No matter which ceremony you are looking for, I can help plan, prepare and create the right ceremony for you. Let me take some of the strain away from your day and bring memorable moments and personal elements, to make it even more special.

If you don’t find exactly what you are looking for, please do not hesitate to get in touch and we can discuss what your needs and wants are, my contact details are at the bottom of my page.

“Happiness comes from helping others, by being with others, and by sharing, even if it's only a smile." ― Zain Hashmi

About Me

In 2021 I qualified in Funeral Celebrancy and then went on to train in Couples and Naming Celebrancy with Civil Ceremonies Ltd. Their excellent, extensive training has set me on my way in the celebrant world. Since qualifying, I have completed further courses including handfasting and other spiritual elements that can be included in weddings and other ceremonies. As an holistic therapist, this aspect of adding something spiritual and special to a ceremony really inspires me. I have also added spiritual and pagan elements to funerals when appropriate.

I feel my previous professions, as an Holistic Therapist and as a Nanny, have enabled me to have a calm, caring attitude, which is certainly needed when you are about to take part in a big life (or death) event.

I love my role as a celebrant, helping people during their darkest moments to see a little bit of light, to help families include personal aspects into their services and in helping those who are starting new lives together to have the best celebration they can.

I am a member of the Association of Independent Celebrants. I am fully insured and DBS registered.

I am currently undertaking my NOCN Level 4 Diploma in Advanced Practice Funeral Celebrancy and am signed up to take part in Advanced Funeral Celebrant Training with Sacred Ceremonies in Glastonbury in November 2024.

Funerals

As an independent funeral celebrant, I can help and deliver a unique ceremony for your loved one. Every life on this earth is unique, as is every death, and every ceremony I do is centred and focused upon the unique life of your person. Together, we can shape and mould a service that celebrates the life they led to be as individual as they were. As an independent celebrant I am happy to follow the wishes of the family and perform the ceremony in a crematorium, burial ground, field or wherever you want the service to be. It can be person centred and contain religious, spiritual or pagan aspects if required.

As your funeral celebrant, I will help guide you through this sad time. During our initial meeting, I will gather as much information as I can about your person. I will then create a very personal ceremony where you can celebrate their life and also say goodbye. I can advise on appropriate music, poetry, and readings and we can work together until you are entirely satisfied that we would be doing your loved one proud.

Death and funerals are subjects that we very rarely speak about, that is until we experience it first-hand when a loved one dies. It can then become a rush to find a funeral director, choose a coffin, and select a venue. Do you choose a burial or cremation? These are questions very rarely raised and discussed until needed. I can help to advise you and your family on what options are available to you. You can contact me directly to be your celebrant or ask your chosen Funeral Director to contact me. I also run quarterly Death Cafés where people come together to discuss all things death and funeral related.

Couples Ceremonies

Weddings can be stressful days, finding the right venue, making sure it is licenced, ensuring they are available for the date and time you want and that a registrar is available. BUT there is another alternative - did you know you can have a marriage celebration ceremony after your legal ceremony?

For example, a registry office charges from £57 for Marriage and Civil Partnership certificate and £35 for your notice of marriage. This is for the couple and the legal 2 witnesses. It is a quick service which gives you the legal title of being married. But by using this option, you then have the freedom to book a wedding celebration ceremony with all the creativity that you want. You can still say your vows, exchange your rings and bring in other elements and people. We can make this the day of your dreams in a setting that you have always wanted. There is literally no limit to your imagination on your day. Indoors or outdoors, daytime or evening, your ceremony the way you want it.

Ceremonies could include:

  • Couple commitment ceremony
  • Wedding blessing ceremony
  • Handfasting ceremony
  • Renewal of vows

I will script the ceremony for you, helping you with elements such as readings and poetry, and symbolic actions that would really bring your day to life. Together, we will make it memorable for you and all your guests.

Handfasting

Full pagan handfasting ceremony - an ancient Celtic and pagan tradition where the bride and groom’s hands were tied together and sealed with a knot. A full Celtic style handfasting ceremony holds many spiritual touches and is based upon nature and the elements. Each ceremony is bespoke. This would be a unique wedding for you to take part in and your guests to observe. A very special ceremony indeed.

A circle is made from plants and flowers and this space becomes a sacred space where the couple and celebrant reside, and special people taking part are invited into the circle. There will be rituals to cover the elements of air, fire, water and earth which make this a unique and intimate ceremony, finishing off with a handfasting which is where the phrase ‘Tying the knot’ originally stems from.

Naming Ceremonies

A name is the first identifying part of who we are. You are given a name from early on in life, and usually it stays with you. A naming ceremony is a chance to announce to your friends and family your child’s name and to make pledges as a parent to your child. You can bring in supporting adults, guides or Godparents and have significant people also make pledges in how they will be involved in your child’s life. I can help you to choose symbolic actions to make your child’s day more personal and meaningful and will help you to choose poetry and readings appropriate for you and your family.

The ceremonies can be to name a baby, to welcome children from different parents into a new family unit, for adopted children, people who have changed their names by Deed Poll, or transgender re-naming ceremonies. With these ceremonies, I will be offering the chance for the new name to be revealed in front of family and friends, marking a change in their lives and hopefully fostering greater understanding and acceptance. You could have a truly special day marking a seminal point in your life, saying goodbye to your old life and welcoming in the new.

Testimonials

"Lisa was brill and beyond. Myself and my partner were hand fasted at Bubbenhall Spring on winter Solstice 2023. The planning included our 10 year old daughter and her wishes also, which Lisa was brilliant with. Lisa really got a grasp of our wishes and also made good suggestions as to what we might like and did the ceremony in the traditional way of tying the knot. Lisa dressed appropriately to how we are. As brightly coloured as possible and in colours and style that she knew that I would like. She included the 4 elements and encouraged us to write a letter to each other which we only revealed on the day. Guests all said it was the best wedding that they'd been too and we agreed that we couldn't have wished for more. Thankyou Lisa xx

What can I say about Lisa. She is just a wonderful lady. So caring and thoughtful. Nothing is too much trouble for her.The time she took in making sure with the family that mums service was just perfect. The way she spoke about her. It was like she had known her personally. Lisa listened to everything we discussed about mums life. She went above and beyond in every detail. We cannot praise her enough. Lisa also gave us a copy of the service and three hearts with mums name on it afterwards as a keepsake. There are certain people in the world who have a natural ability for communicating with people in a special way. Lisa is one of these. Thanking you Lisa.

I can’t thank Lisa enough for the beautiful celebration of life she did for my partner Ian. From beginning to the end she was amazing. Lisa found time to talk to us, to listen and to use that time to understand Ian’s life and personality. Her service summed him up perfectly. She gave us helpful advice and suggestions when we were planning what we wanted to do and we were able to give Ian a great and fitting send off. Sure he would have loved hearing about all his adventures! Lisa was calm, caring and supportive throughout and her presence helped all of us. Thank you so much.

I would highly recommend this kind, caring and professional lady who recently led my mum’s funeral and then later her interment of ashes. She listens and advises with such thoughtfulness and care. Its been 5 months since I lost my husband John. Lisa came to our house before John passed to discuss his wishes. He had terminal cancer so he wanted to get everything sorted. When my mum passed away suddenly it was a devastating time and being an only child the arrangements were left to me. I contacted Lisa immediately and she was wonderful. She ensured I was happy with every detail and even took the time to talk to my son and gently encouraged him to open up about happier times with his grandma which we included in the service. Several people took the time to let me know just how wonderful and personal my mothers funeral was and I have Lisa to thank for that. I honestly can’t recommend her highly enough, she’s one in a million.

My mum passed away in January. I dont live local so it was quite hard to start making arrangements, but Lisa was wonderful. She called me via video on WhatsApp and took time to ask me questions about mum and her life. She then emailed me drafts of the service, making amendments until it was perfect. On the day, she was a clear speaker and it was like she had known mum personally. I would definitely recommend her to anyone looking for a celebrant who is genuinely interested in both the lost one and the loved ones left behind.

It’s taken a while to write this review. Firstly because I was so grief stricken and secondly I just couldn’t articulate or express how incredible Lisa was during the whole process. Thank you Lisa for making Kays service so personal and capturing her spirit. You were so kind, wise and caring. You were a safe pair of hands that scooped us up and guided us. Your patience and determination to make sure you understood who Kay was, gave us a service that we know she would have been delighted with. We had so many messages after saying “ I know this is a strange thing to say but I really enjoyed that service”. As Christmas was getting closer and I was starting to struggle you astounded us by sending such a thoughtful Christmas card and message. Wow what an incredibly kind and thoughtful thing to do. From the bottom of our hearts we thank you and feel very lucky and blessed that you were our Celebrant xx

Lisa was brilliant from start to finish. She gave a personal, loving and very caring funeral for my mum. She spent a great deal of time creating my mums service she loved Elvis and Lisa put in many of Elvis’s song titles into the script which was so clever. Family members and friends all commented on this and said they felt Lisa was one of the family. She helped me when I wobbled and was also a comfort to other family members. Thank you Lisa x

Lisa conducted a wonderful funeral for my mum – I don’t think it could have gone any better. Lisa had got to know us and done a lot of prep beforehand which really paid off – it felt like she was one of the family! To prepare, Lisa first met with my niece and me over zoom (our choice because neither of us is based in Coventry) and we had a long chat about my mum’s life. This was very therapeutic for us. Lisa was just so nice, natural, down to earth, very easy to talk to. From this Lisa created the script which she sent to us and we had the opportunity to edit. She also advised on the whole content – running order, poems, tributes. She was at hand to answer any questions in the run up to the funeral. She rang the day before to make sure we were happy and give us the opportunity to ask any questions. Then on the day she was so calm and supportive and presented an excellent service. My dad and the rest of the family were very happy. I think Lisa really helped us pay the best possible tribute to my mum.

isa recently supported my mum with the funeral service of her partner. Mum lives alone with her grownup children and grandchildren all 100’s of miles away. Lisa stepped to be a surrogate daughter for mum at such an emotional time. Mum was relieved and delighted to meet Lisa, bowled over by her kindness and compassion. Lisa was attentive and creative in the preparation of the service, and accommodated some very last minute changes without fuss and couldn’t have been more helpful. The service was exactly as mum wanted and told me “Brian would have loved it”. I only met Lisa on the day of the funeral but knew exactly how mum had described her was true. I felt that she was like a member of our family for those 30 minutes of the service. Although is was a small service Lisa filled the room with love and some laughter. She was first person mum hugged afterwards. I will never forget her bright pink dress, her smile and her presence. I know Lisa is a relatively new celebrant but think she was excellent and a fantastic ambassador for her profession. She did us proud, we were very lucky to have had her as our celebrant on our very special day.

Lisa did an amazing job for our mums funeral. She invested a lot of time to ensure she got the essence of a life well lived and a lady well loved. Lisa has a lovely calming vibe which is appreciated during a difficult time. She put her heart and soul into delivering the perfect eulogy and steered us all through the procedure. I would highly recommend her services and truly enjoyed meeting this lovely lady.

Lisa conducted a lovely funeral for my mum. She took time to come out to visit me and my dad, wrote a wonderful script, provided a beautiful funeral service on the day which was really personal and touching, and was supportive and helpful throughout the whole process.

Lisa, was such a support to me when my husband Michael passed away suddenly. She came to my home and immediately I was drawn to her wonderful calmness and friendly nature. Lisa made it so easy for me to talk about Michael, about his life and our life together. She told me what to expect at the funeral and talked me through it all. When the funeral day arrived the service was beautiful and Lisa spoke about Michael just like she had know him years. Not only did Lisa give Michael the wonderful send off he deserved. Lisa has been a support to me after the funeral, calling me to chat and visiting at my home too. I think of Lisa as a friend now… she supported me through one of worst things that could possibly happen. I am so honoured that Lisa came into my life. She is a wonderful lady.

Lisa was recommended to me and my family to be the celebrant at my dads funeral. From the first moment of interacting with Lisa we instantly knew she would give dad the service he deserved. She was friendly and instantly put us all at ease. She listened tentatively to stories of dad and let us ramble as we reminisced. Throughout numerous meetings she even relayed memories/stories we hadn’t realised we had told her. Lisa was constantly in touch and supported us through this difficult time, I believe she went beyond the jobs role which just showed us she is a genuinely kind person with a big heart. Her delivery of the service was touching and many people have commented about her delivery and her professional manner stating it was the best service they had attended. She captured dads character with her words and ended the service perfectly. We couldn’t have wished for a better send off for our king. I couldn’t recommend her enough.
Laura Beardsmore
Lisa created and delivered 3 beautiful ceremonies for my Dad. The funeral and two ashes ceremonies. So many people who were there with me have commented how heartfelt and beautiful they each were. A couple of friends said the funeral was the best service they’ve attended as it was so personal and touching. Lisa has advised and supported me during my journey of grief on top of this. She is a true professional but more importantly a kind soul and this shines out in everything she does. She has a knack of reading people and knowing what they need. I really can’t recommend her enough.

Lisa created a wonderful rite of passage ceremony for my daughter, who is off to university soon. The event was gently impactful and profoundly magickal. Lisa was engaging and knowledgeable and her beautiful ceremony has left us feeling honoured and blessed. We are now ready to embark on our new adventures with confidence. Lisa is a creative and luminous being and a blessing on any event she is invited to officiate. What one needs from a great celebrant is the ability to craft a special ceremony that is deeply personal, professional yet friendly and welcoming and memorable for all the right reasons. Lisa performs her duties fabulously.
Jules Sparkles
I am very grateful for such a wonderful ceremony having been conducted and led by such a lovely woman. Lisa created a beautiful sacred space, opening the ceremony with a lovely quote which resonated with my own relationship to my mother. Each of the elements we interacted with felt personal and spiritual. While Lisa guided me thoughtfully around the sacred space, I was able to share the experience with my mother, reconnecting to the Earth in the process which was an incredible opportunity. Being reminded of the relationship I have to each of the elements was such a beautiful thing, reminding me how I am part of something so much greater. It was such a blessing to have this moment of my journey celebrated in such a meaningful way.
Amy Sharples
I would recommend Lisa Dundas as the funeral Celebrant to anyone who is going through hard times in losing loved ones. Lisa was and is courteous, kind and patient. Lisa Dundas advised us on ways to make the funeral more frugal as well as human rather than a process . We are forever grateful the way you have looked after our needs from beginning to the end. Thank you Lisa.
